Choosing Degree Part 3 – Elimination

So after we collect all the relevant options and discover our strengths, weaknesses, desires, and boring points, it’s time to start taking options down.

The Art of Elimination – The Dealbreakers

Remember the dealbreakers?

Let’s start with them.

I am inviting you to go through your options list and write down near them to that your dealbreakers from part 1

For example, if working outdoor is a dealbreaker for you, write “working outdoor” near the relevant options (for example, gardening and agriculture). And delete this option. It is that simple.

Example 2: working with people – let’s say you are very extroverted. You like being with people. You like relationships. Talking with people gives you a lot of power.

But you want to learn a software engineering degree for the money.

  • Sometimes while you write the deal breaker near the degree you want, the deal breaker wouldn’t seem so bad. If this happens, I invite you to examine the deal breaker again and see if it’s that bad for you or if it may be okay.

So now I’m inviting you to take a good look at this and see if there is another profession that may be more relevant to your skills. One that you can still earn a lot of money, but you will be able to speak a lot with people doing your job.

The art of elimination – a better alternative

Write near every degree option that you have in table three main things:

1) Interest level

2) Estimate demand in the market/average salary.

3) How much does it fit your abilities.

After you rank every degree option, look at the option and see if there is one that is least good than another option in all of those categories.

For example, let’s say that a social worker degree is ranked 6,8,7. And you rank education degree (teaching) 8,9,8.

A social working degree is not a bad option, but education is better in each category. So we can eliminate this option.

Keep doing this process for all of your degree options on the table. Can use the same strategies for choosing a college.

At this point, you should be with 2-4 options. Some of you even got your answer 🙂

Now is the time to choose – in part 4, final degree selection ->
